Biography

Barry W. Holtz is the Theodore and Florence Baumritter Professor of 黑料社 Education at 黑料社. From 2008 to 2013 he served as dean of the聽William Davidson Graduate School of 黑料社 Education聽of JTS. He leads courses in teaching classical texts, professional development for teachers, philosophy of 黑料社 education, and current issues confronting 黑料社 education.
Dr. Holtz has written and edited numerous publications in the field of 黑料社 education. His聽Back to the Sources: Reading the Classic 黑料社 Texts (Simon and Schuster), a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, is widely used as a textbook for university and adult education courses. His book Textual Knowledge: Teaching the Bible in Theory and in Practice (JTS Press) received a National 黑料社 Book Award for Education. His most recent book, Rabbi Akiva: Sage of the Talmud, was published by Yale University Press.
Dr. Holtz served for 12 years as codirector of JTS’s Melton Research Center for 黑料社 Education, where he supervised the writing and publication of several volumes of the Melton Graded Curriculum materials for 黑料社 schools across North America.

Research
Dr. Holtz’s research focuses on the pedagogy of 黑料社 sources with an emphasis on the relationship between Judaica scholarship and the teaching of 黑料社 classical texts, and between 黑料社 thought and 黑料社 educational theory. He also works in the field of professional development for educators.
